Review: Taut: The Ford Book (Rook and Ronin Spinoff) by J.A. Huss

Synopsis
Ford Aston is known for many things. Being an emotionless, messed up bastard, a freakishly smart social outcast, and a cold, domineering master who keeps "pets" instead of girlfriends.

And after Rook broke his heart, he plans to keep it that way.

Ashleigh is known for nothing, and that's exactly what she's got going for her. She's broke, stranded in the mountains with a three month old baby, and Ford Aston is screwing with her head.

Big. Time.

And she plans to mess with his right back.

It's a coy game at first, filled with flirting, and innuendo--but Ford soon realizes something is not quite right with Ashleigh. In fact, something is seriously, seriously wrong and the closer they get to their final destination, the closer Ford gets to the truth.

One night of devastation, self-loathing, and emptiness turns into the best thing that ever happened to Ford Aston. But one day of in-your-face reality threatens Ashleigh's whole existence.

Ford first appears in Rook and Ronin #2, Manic. He has a bigger role in Panic, R&R #3, and then he has a novella, called SLACK. This TAUT book is only FORD. It's not really part of the R&R series, as that plot has all been sidelined for this one romance book.

My Review
5 Taut Stars!!
Why haven't I read any book by this author before? Where have I been?!
I have seen a lot of people go on about the series by this author but the synopsis of this one caught my eyes and I was like that's it I'm putting everything down and getting this book.And then I won a giveaway which allowed to to choose any ebook and of course I chose this one because this looked like a perfect book for me and obviously looking at what I rated it,you can tell that it sooo was!

I haven't read the 'Rook and Ronin' Series and maybe I really should? I think I would recommend reading the series first because there were a few moments of confusion for me when I didn't really know the background stuff and was curious.I'm also going to go through and add every J.A.Huss book to my TBR shelf.Thanks J.A.Huss, like I needed more on that list ;)

'I will never- ever-care for another woman for as long as I live.

I will never allow myself to be weak like this again.'

It all starts when we see Ford running away from something he needed to accept and try move on from.He thinks he needs to be alone but its the opposite, he needs someone to love.Someone who will love him with everything in her.He is fed up of being lonely, or left behind.Ford has never been normal so he wears smart clothes and tries to blend in. Being stuck in a snow storm and his car breaking down and being faced with people from his past, well things aren't looking good. That is until he decides to do something nice and let a woman with a baby sleep in the same room as him.

They are both lost and struggling to carry on in a way and when they find each other at just the right time.They need someone to hold on to and that becomes each other.There were so many parts of this book i really wasn't expecting and I didn't want it to end, I kept checking the percentage and then having a mini panic attack because I was somehow reading this fast, or it was just the fact that I could not stop reading.

'You can be appreciated for who you are, even if your only talent is a little bit strange and that seems to have no value.Because everyone is valuable.'

^Love this.This is another one going into my favourites list and another for my I-Need-This-In-Paperback shelf.Love the cover and Ford, my new book boyfriend, Where can I find him? I liked him with all his quirks and everything! My heart broke for Ashleigh. Loved Kate and Ford moments, I need more.I wanted the ending to be extended! Can't wait to read more from this author..but right now I have a book hangover :(

EXCERPT

His heart beat like a drum—fast and hard and loud.
His breath blew strong like a windstorm, his chest contracting with his harsh pants.
Fear seeped from his bones, from every cell of his being, his hands shaking like a leaf and sweat dropped from his hot skin.
"Welcome to hell, boy."
These four words greeted Boy as he was brutally propelled into a dank basement by a hugely built guard. Everywhere was black; the blackest of black. The guards wore black, the walls of the truck that had brought him here was black, the sky outside was black and the windowless room they now stood in, black. The stagnant air was humid and thick, the temperature in the room, scalding. The stench of slick grease, sweat, and something more putrid burned Boy's nostrils making him retch and his feet stuck to the sticky, grimy ground.
Hell, Boy thought, considering the guard’s words. It was a living breathing hell.
Then the guard pushed him again, this time down a steep, slippery staircase, dull lights sunken into the walls. The high brick walls were a browning-yellowing color and ancient fans whined in the background vainly attempting to cool the too-hot air. Overhead pipes steadily dripped raw sewage on the concrete floor and rats and other vermin swarmed around his feet.
The place was a shithole.
Once again, a heavy hand pushed Boy's back, thrusting him down a narrow hallway. With every step, Boy could hear his breath echo louder in his ears. With every step, he could feel his pounding heart slam harder in his chest at an almost bruising rate. And with every step, he could hear more and more loudly a raucous cacophony coming from straight ahead, just beyond a thick-looking iron door. People were screaming and jeering, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of metal clanging against metal.
Boy’s eyes were wide as he stared at the door, his nostrils flaring with terror. Nothing in this place screamed ‘safe’; in fact, with every new turn all he felt was pure terror.
The guard reached around Boy; loudly and slowly he knocked twice on the iron door, each knock thudding through his chest like a canon. Locks unbolted, keys jingled, and finally, the iron door cracked open.
Boy's eyes widened in disbelief as he drank in the scene. Grown men were everywhere in the overcrowded room. There wasn’t a spare inch free, sweaty bodies pushing and shoving one another from thick wall to thick wall. The men were drinking vodka, exchanging money, hands waving in excitement as they all faced straight ahead, their focus set on something just ahead.
"Move, boy," the guard ordered. Boy dragged his feet, reluctant to step across the threshold into “hell.” But he couldn’t move. He was frozen to the spot, his legs shaking and a dizziness spun in his head.
Gripping the scruff of Boy's neck, the guard tightened his hold, making Boy wince as he was steered aggressively through the baying crowd. Grown men stopped and sized up Boy, some in approval, most in dismissal. They all became a blur to Boy, the sight and smells too much for him to process.
Boy felt faint. His lungs burned with the velocity of his short breaths. Boy's fingers shook in sympathy with his fear, but he shook his head, cleared his fearful thoughts like his father had taught him to do and he managed to keep his head held high, meeting the owner of each curious stare right in the eye.
As the crowd slowly parted, Boy startled at the scene in front of him—a huge floor-to-ceiling square steel cage, the tops wrapped with sharp razor wire, with flashes of movement coming from within. Pained grunts and spurts of blood escaped the cage, splattering his gray-uniformed chest and bare face. This time no breath came from his lungs at all. He was frozen; frozen on the spot with shock, the tinny scent of blood invading his nose.
Boy couldn’t believe his eyes. Could not digest the sight that greeted him: pain, cut flesh, cries, blood… so much pain and blood.
Suddenly, a wash of putrid breath blew past his ear. Boy flinched as he inhaled the sickening stench of stale food and acrid tobacco smoke.
"Drink it in, boy. That will be you in the cage before too long."
Boy held his breath until his chest could take no more. He exhaled sharply, resisting the urge to cough or cry out.
Boy had been taught from a very young age never to show emotion. His father would punish him if he dared complain, never mind cry. He refused to start here and now. Boy resolved to remain composed, lugubrious, and stoic anything he had to be to get through this… this, whatever the hell it was.
A loud rip sounded from the cage, the sound slicing down his back and bringing vomit to his mouth. As a huge spectator abruptly moved out of the way smiling in celebration, everything became clear. The fighters in the cage were kids… boys who looked no older than himself.
And they were fighting… to the death…

MY REVIEW
5 I Love Raze Stars!!

“Whatever our souls are made of—“

“His and mine are the same...”

I was so excited to get my hands on this book.Just read the bloody synopsis and tell me does it not make you want the book, like right now? I'm so happy I got an arc, I just knew I would love this one. Tillie Cole can you quit blowing me away with your awesome books? This book is awesome, one of those books you can not stop reading and you are up all night and you never want it to finish.

I don't want to give anything away, you just need to grab this book and hold on tight because it will be one hell of a roller-coaster ride. I was captivated and hooked from the first page and fell in love with Raze. My heart hurt for him and also for Kisa. They belonged together and always would.No matter what happened they would eventually find each other.

“You’re Raze, you’re death. Let’s fucking Raze hell!”

A boy who was turned into a killing machine.A girl who had to adapt to brutality and abuse to survive. Raze was turned into a monster but he once had a life, he is sure he did.He just can't remember it anymore.He only knows one thing, he needs revenge. He will kill the man who put him in a cage, who made him who he is.Who turned him into nothing, he would finally get revenge.

'I killed because I had to. I had no other choice. I was already dead, no more than a number; stripped of morals, stripped of freedom and stripped of life. I was an animal conditioned to inflict pain without remorse. And you cannot kill someone who has no soul.'

I was clutching on and waiting to see what would happen next. This book made me feel, too many emotions and I wanted to save both Kisa and Raze.Their parts made my heart melt aww! Raze was just perfect!! Ahh I don't even know what to say, I'm lost for words.

Kisa was also a great character and she was put in some horrible situations an proved to be a survivor.They were always meant to be together, they fit like two jig-saw puzzles.The chemistry, the feelings ah just everything. I loved how the story came together, the twists and turns and the characters. Tillie Cole give me more!! Highly recommend this book. Can not wait to read more books by this author, I am addicted :D

Review: You Don't Have to Say You Love Me by Sarra Manning

Synopsis
Sweet, bookish Neve Slater always plays by the rules and the number one rule is that good-natured fat girls like her don't get guys like gorgeous, handsome William, heir to Neve's heart since university. But William's been in LA for three years, and Neve's been slimming down and re-inventing herself so that when he returns, he'll fall head over heels in love with the new, improved her.

So she's not that interested in other men. Until her sister Celia points out that if Neve wants William to think she's an experienced love-goddess and not the fumbling, awkward girl he left behind, then she'd better get some, well, experience.

What Neve needs is someone to show her the ropes, someone like Celia's colleague Max. Wicked, shallow, sexy Max. And since he's such a man-slut, and so not Neve's type, she certainly won't fall for him. Because William is the man for her... right?

My Review
3 Stars!!

This book took me a while to get through, I don't usually take this long I think its due to the fact that parts of this book had me so frustrated and annoyed and others were at times too slow for my liking.

Max and Neve are the main characters and they both have issues they need to deal with. Neve thinks she is in love with William some boring guy that is out of the country at the moment and when he comes back she doesnt want him to see her as the fat girl he left but the size 10 women she strives to become.She thinks when he returns and sees her he will fall in love and they will live happily ever after discussing literature and being boring. He just bored me and anyone but Neve could see that they were too similar and she needed someone who was a lot more fun and well totally different from Neve.

This is where Max comes in who works with Neve's sister.Max doesn't do relationships, thats his problem.He sleeps around and gets bored and sleeps around some more. When these two characters meet they connect, they are totally different yet they are drawn together. So what happens when Neve proposes a pancake relationship? (You have to read it to understand the pancake relationship) He totally agrees, what could possibly go wrong?

“That was the worst thing about having a relationship with someone, even a pretend relationship. You opened up, let someone in, and when it was over, they had all the ammunition they needed to completely destroy you.”

Neve wants to get some experience and brush up on her flirting skills and so on..who better to try with than Max, someone who could never be attracted to her..or so she thinks.

Overall I liked it, it had some pretty funny, cute parts and I really like Max. Aww Max! But he did have a big problem ignoring such obvious hints! I wanted to smack him around the head at times. Most of all Neve frustrated me to no end, her distorted thinking, all the issues she had that she needed to work out instead of dieting.It all starts from loving yourself no matter what size you are, if you can't do that then you can be size 6 and still find yourself fat or repulsive.It's more about inner beauty. I really wanted to scream at Neve when she thought about William like omg DOES HE EVEN LIKE YOU? It was a lot about her! I hope you enjoy this book more than I did :)

Review: Disfigured Love by Georgia Le Carre

Synopsis

Once unmasked, can beauty love the beast?...

My name is Lena Seagull. I should still be in school, hanging out with friends, meeting boys, falling in love—just like you. But on my eighteenth birthday my father sold me. Now, those are yesterday’s dreams.

My home is now a remote castle. And the man who owns me? I have never seen him.

Guy Hawke keeps his face hidden under a mask. At first, I knew only fear, but now his voice and touch make me unashamedly want him. Each night, his hired help blindfolds me, and takes me to his room. He whispers that I am beautiful and we have wild, torrid sex. When I awaken he is always gone.

He and his castle hold dark secrets that I must unravel, but what he fears most—being unmasked—is my deepest desire.

Will either of us survive the consequences of my desire?

My Review
5 Beautiful Beast Stars!!

I loved this book! When I first saw this I was like, I need this book because this sounds great. I loved beauty and the beast (though I wanted him to always stay the beast and not turn back to a pretty boy) and I just couldn't wait to get started. I really needed this one to work for me since the previous book I had been reading had just been too slow and really wasn't working for me.So when I got this one I just hoped it would bring me out of the book funk.And it soooo did! I saw mixed ratings on GRs, looked like one of those that you love or just think they are meh. I've recently stopped judging a book because of the rating or reviews of others, well not judging but I do give some books a miss because of the stars which annoys me. I don't ever want to miss an incredible book because of book rating or other people's opinion.

"Have you ever done something shameful to survive?" I asked defiantly.
"Yes." His voice was unemotional and cold.
I was shocked. I had not really expected him to answer me.
"What?" I whispered.
"I bought you."

I'm so happy I read this one, it consisted of so much emotion and my heart was all over the place by the ending. This is the fist book I have read by Georgia Le Carre but it definitely won't be the last.The writing, the characters, the story had me at the edge of my seat.I was hooked from the first page and by the last I never wanted to let go. I wanted to curl up in this book and stay there..or maybe just in Guy's bed? That's cool too ;)

"The answer to the question you asked yesterday is simple. You are mine. You will always be mine and only mine. And while I am alive you will never have another man in you body."

I read through the night and really needed to put it down, and when I did I was still thinking about it. A chapter more can't hurt right? I need to know what will happen next!!

The top thing for me to love a book is that it has to make me feel, that doesn't mean it has to be all good feelings. Any emotion (other that hate for the characters and story lol) the author can draw out of me is a good thing!And this was one of those books for me, there were moments that were intense and painful. My heart felt like it was being squeezed so tight and other moments where I was giddy with happiness.And Lena's brothers part just bloody broke me *sobs* I was crushed and so angry, hurt and so many other feelings that don't have names.

“I thought I was holding on tight but she had slipped out like sand.”

I would have loved more Guy POVs, we just see small glimpses through his point of view. Oh and I want to know where the other siblings got to, what happened to them? Can they get their story? Because that would be awesome.Now I'm off to check out and add GLC's other books to my to-read!!

My Review
3 Stars!!

"We've never been over. You know it as well as I do. Even when I was halfway around the world and you hated my guts, we weren't over. You can feel it between us now. And the closer we are, the stronger it gets."

Okay why did I think this was a standalone? Why do I never pay attention to these things? Pft! Well I finished this one and I know that the majority of the reviews I have seen are rated 5 star but I'm really not sure what to rate mine.
I think this book really needed at least some parts with Ethan's POV. I swear that would have been so useful. Throughout this book we flipped from past to future, is it just me who liked things to go in order.Like simple few flashbacks are fine but the constant back and forth really didn't do it for me.I wanted it to start from when the main characters are introduced to each other and show their dysfunctional relationship then skip a few years until they meet again.

I really liked the writing and it made me want to read on.There were some quite funny parts which is an obvious plus and also the chemistry between the main characters, I loved.There was passion, raw emotions, heartbreak, love and a second-chance? Who knows what will happen and how the story will continue.

"I want things to be different. If you want me to apologize, I'll do it until I lose my fucking voice. I just want things to be right between us. Talk to me. Help me fix this."

I'm not a fan of lots of push and pull, so one person begging for the other one and the not being together even though both the characters want to be together. Why do people not want to be happy? I like happy okay! I'm still trying to gather my thoughts on this one. I just didn't feel as connected to the story and characters as I like to be. And it did cause the book to drag for me, I don't usually take this long to read a book.

Came back to it and it 2.5 for the lack of connection but then there were parts that I enjoyed so I would overall give it 3 Stars.I really wish I could give it higher ratings but it just wasn't one for me.Even though I didn't love it you just might soo if it looks like something you would enjoy. do give it a shot and I hope it turns out better for you! :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q&A With Maureen
1. What was you fav book from your childhood?
It’s hard to pick just one because I read so much when I was younger, but If I had to choose, it’d have to be The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. I read this book in 6th grade, after already having seen and loved the movie, but I enjoyed the book so much more. There are just some feelings and emotions that aren’t portrayed as well on screen, but I was immediately immersed into this book and instantly fell in love with the characters. That’s one thing that even now I look for in books. If I feel a connection with the characters and the story can evoke some emotion within me, then the author is doing their job.
2. Who inspires you?
For me it’s not a “who”, but a “what” that inspires me. Life inspires me. Every day that I’m alive, I’m inspired by the world around me. Whether it’s a personal experience, a book I read, a picture I saw, a person who crossed my path, or a conversation I overheard…everything around me inspires me. I try to write my stories based on real life situations, and what better inspiration is there than the natural occurrences that happen around you?
3. If you could bring to life any one character who would it be and why?
Harry Potter! I mean, come on, who wouldn’t want to run around casting spells with their own personal wizard friend? I know I would!
4. If you could be a man for the day what would you do? Crazy silly answers are welcome ;)
Oh boy! *giggles* I’m sure any woman would want to know what it feel like to have an extra…ahem…appendage. No lie, I would want to test out peeing while standing up. Definitely jerk off a few times. Maybe bang a chick or two…or three. You said only one day, I’ve got to make the most of it!
5.If you could live in a book which book would it be?
Again, definitely Harry Potter! The books portrayed a world like no other, and if I could go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and be friends with all of the characters in the books, I would be in heaven. I’m still patiently waiting for an owl to arrive with my letter!
6. Celebrity crush?
Paul Rudd. The guy is 45 and still so damn sexy! Plus his sense of humor makes him even more attractive. If a guy doesn’t have a good sense of humor, then he doesn’t stand a chance of registering on my radar.
7.What are you currently reading?
I actually just finished Here With Me (The Archer Brothers #1) by Heidi McLaughlin, and holy hell, what a cliffhanger! The book was fantastic and now I’m dying to get my hands on the next one.
8. One thing most people don't know about you?
I’m actually really shy, to the point that I have social anxiety when I’m in unfamiliar places. I attended my first signing as an author this year in Tampa (it was also my first time flying), and to say I was nervous is an understatement. Knowing people were coming there to see me was so surreal, and I wasn’t sure how to handle that. I’m just a regular person like anyone else, and I’ve always hated being the center of attention, but once the signing was under way and they started letting the fans in, I found myself coming out of my shell more. Now that I’ve experienced that, I can’t wait to attend more signings. It was so much fun!
9. Are any characters in your books similar to you as a person? personality, traits so on?
I think the one character I can relate to the most is Liberty from my Second Chances Series. I’m only twenty-seven (I was twenty-five when I started writing her story), and while she was growing as a young woman and trying to find her place in the world, I was as well. I found writing to be very therapeutic, and I think in a way I was pouring a bit of myself into her character. A lot of authors will suggest that you write what you know, and I think that definitely proved to be true while developing Liberty’s character. Not to mention we’ve both grown as the series progressed. I like to think of her as my fictional BFF.
10. Fav book of all time?
Taking Chances by Molly McAdams. Ugh, I’m STILL not over it. That book was one of the worst ugly cries I’ve ever had, and my heart breaks just thinking about it. That’s one story that will stick with me for a long time to come. #TeamChase4Life
11. Fav tv show and/Or movie?
Hmm favorite TV show is without a doubt Friends. Favorite movie…that’s a tough one. I’d have to go with either Anchorman or Stepbrothers. I’m a sucker for anything with Will Ferrell in it, and I love to laugh, so his movies always come to mind first.
12. If you could be any paranormal being for a day which would you choose to be and why?
In all seriousness, I would love to be a ghost. Ha, I’d be the asshole playing tricks on everyone, especially those who treated me poorly while I was still alive. That’s karma for ya!
13.Which book would have loved to have written?
That’s a toss up between Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan and Bright Side by Kim Holden. Both such talented authors and amazing books in their own way. They wrote some of the most unique characters I’ve ever read, Mia’s hero Archer and Kim’s heroine Kate, and I couldn’t help but wish that I had come up with them myself! Sometimes it’s not just the quality of the author’s writing that draws you in, but the creativity behind the story and characters, and these two authors nailed it.
